Bauhaus Carpet No. 2 by Gertrrud Arndt

The Bauhaus 2 Carpet by Gertrud Arndt is a remarkable piece of design history, originally created in 1924. This carpet is known for its geometric precision and subtle color palette, embodying the Bauhaus movement’s principles of form and function.

The design features 192 hand-knotted squares arranged in a meticulous pattern. The primary colors are various shades of blue and grey, interspersed with light and dark yellow squares towards the center. This composition creates a harmonious yet dynamic visual effect, reflecting the Bauhaus emphasis on geometric abstraction and color theory.

The Bauhaus 2 Carpet was specifically designed for the office of Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus school. This connection adds to its historical significance, as Gropius’ office served as a showcase for the innovative works produced by Bauhaus students and faculty.

Handcrafted from pure new wool, the carpet measures 180 x 240 cm and is a testament to the high standards of craftsmanship upheld by the Bauhaus weaving workshop. Its re-edition, based on detailed documentation from the Bauhaus Archive and Arndt’s family records, ensures that this iconic design continues to be appreciated by contemporary audiences.
